DF Type Mechanical Face Seal

DF Type Mechanical Face Seal

The two main different types of face seals are O-ring type (DO type) and trapezoid type (DF type). These types refer to the shape of the secondary sealing element cross-section. DO type is the most common. DF type offers easier installation without special tools, as well as more easily machined housings. Both types consist of two identical metal seal rings mounted in two separate housings face-to-face on a lapped seal face. The metal rings are centered within their housings by an elastomer element. One half of the Mechanical Face Seal remains static in the housing, while the other half rotates with its counter face.

DF Type Mechanical Face Seal | Trapezoid Floating Seal | ZHONO

DF type mechanical face seal also called heavy duty seal,it has an elastomer with a diamond-shaped cross section as a secondary sealing element instead of the O Ring. The seal rings are assembled with trapezoid elastomer parts which are positionedagainst the particular housing bore.DF type requires slightly less installation space in theaxial direction than the standard DO type mechanical face seal. The geometry of the housing contour is easier to manufacture, and the seal installation does not require an installation tool.

This design is suitable for rotating components working around mud, dust, sand, water and other abrasive contaminants. DF mechanical face seals are commonly used in construction, mining, agricultural and industrial equipment where reliable lubricant retention and protection of bearings and drivetrain components are required.

What Makes the DF Type Mechanical Face Seal Different?

The main difference between DO and DF mechanical face seals is the design of the secondary elastomer element. A DO seal uses a toric O-ring, while the DF mechanical face seal uses a diamond-shaped or trapezoidal elastomer ring.

This DF profile provides several practical advantages for machinery designers, OEMs and replacement-parts buyers:

  • ◆  Requires less axial installation space than a conventional DO profile

  • ◆  Fits a comparatively simple housing geometry

  • ◆  Helps reduce housing machining complexity

  • ◆  Does not require a dedicated installation tool

  • ◆  Provides elastic support and positioning for the metal seal rings

  • ◆  Accommodates vibration and limited misalignment during operation

  • ◆  Protects lubricated components against external contamination

These characteristics make DF Type Mechanical Face Seals particularly useful when installation space and housing design are important considerations.

For applications requiring the conventional toric O-ring configuration, see our DO Type Mechanical Face Seals.

How Does a DF Mechanical Face Seal Work?

A DF mechanical face seal consists of two precision-matched metal sealing rings and two trapezoidal elastomer elements.

The two metal rings are installed face-to-face in separate housings. One sealing ring rotates with the equipment component, while the mating ring remains stationary.

The precision-lapped metal faces form the primary dynamic sealing interface.

The trapezoidal elastomer elements perform several important functions within the sealing system:

  • ◆  Center the metal sealing rings within the housing

  • ◆  Provide the axial force required to maintain face contact

  • ◆  Transfer torque between the housing and sealing components

  • ◆  Allow limited flexibility under vibration and misalignment

  • ◆  Form the secondary seal between the metal ring and housing

During operation, the metal sealing faces help retain lubricant inside the equipment while preventing mud, dust, sand, water and abrasive particles from reaching the protected components.

Where Are DF Type Mechanical Face Seals Used?

DF Type Mechanical Face Seals are predominantly used for sealing the bearings in construction machinery or production plants operating under extremely arduous conditions and subject to severe wear.

These include:

  • ◆  Tracked vehicles, such as excavators and bulldozers

  • ◆  Conveyor systems

  • ◆  Heavy trucks

  • ◆  Axles

  • ◆  Tunnel boring machines

  • ◆  Agriculture machines

  • ◆  Mining machines

Mechanical Face Seals are proven for use in gearboxes, mixers, stirrers, wind-driven power stations and other applications with similar conditions or where minimized maintenance levels are needed.

Quality Control for DF Mechanical Face Seals

Consistent mechanical face seal performance depends on metal material, hardness, sealing-face quality, dimensions and dynamic operation.

ZHONO's technical testing capabilities support these important areas.

Dynamic Lifetime Testing

Dynamic testing can simulate rotating operation under controlled speed and temperature conditions to evaluate sealing performance and oil leakage.

Material Composition Analysis

Spectrometer analysis is used to check the composition of metal sealing rings.

Rockwell Hardness Testing

Hardness inspection helps verify the properties associated with wear resistance of the metal sealing rings.

Metallographic Examination

Metallographic testing helps evaluate the internal structure of metal materials and provides additional information for material quality assessment.

DF Mechanical Face Seal Installation Considerations

One important advantage of the DF profile is that a dedicated installation tool is normally not required.

However, correct installation remains essential to sealing performance.

Before assembly:

  • ◆  Clean the seal housing completely.

  • ◆  Remove dirt, metal particles and old lubricant from the seating area.

  • ◆  Inspect the housing for damage or burrs.

  • ◆  Keep the precision-lapped metal sealing faces clean.

  • ◆  Make sure the trapezoidal elastomer rings are positioned evenly.

  • ◆  Avoid twisting, uneven compression or displacement of the elastomer.

  • ◆  Install both sealing halves squarely in their respective housings.

  • ◆  Protect the lapped sealing surfaces from scratches and impact.

After installation, confirm that both seal halves are correctly seated before the equipment is put into operation.

Why Source DF Type Mechanical Face Seals from ZHONO?

ZHONO is a specialized manufacturer focused on the development, production and supply of mechanical face seals and floating seals for demanding industrial and heavy-equipment applications. From metal seal ring manufacturing to precision finishing and inspection, we control the critical processes that affect sealing accuracy, wear resistance and product consistency.

ZHONO has dedicated production and inspection equipment for floating seal manufacturing. We specialized mechanical face seal manufacturing: For DF Type seals, we can support equipment manufacturers, aftermarket parts suppliers and distributors with standard size selection, replacement seal matching and application-based technical assistance.

ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management

ZHONO operates under an ISO 9001:2015 quality management system, with quality control applied throughout production, inspection and packaging.

Our mechanical face seal production also follows applicable industry standards including JB/T 8293-2014 and MT/T 784-2011, providing a defined basis for product manufacturing and inspection.

Material and Performance Testing

Quality control goes beyond dimensional checking. ZHONO uses dedicated testing equipment to evaluate factors that directly affect mechanical face seal performance, including:

  • ◆  Metal material composition

  • ◆  Rockwell hardness

  • ◆  Metallographic structure

  • ◆  Dimensional accuracy

  • ◆  Sealing face condition

  • ◆  Dynamic operating performance

These inspections help us maintain consistency between production batches and identify potential material or processing issues before shipment.

For new OEM projects, operating conditions such as speed, temperature, lubricant, pressure and contamination level can also be reviewed when determining a suitable seal configuration.

Whether you are sourcing a standard DF Type seal or evaluating a seal for a specific application, our manufacturing, inspection and technical capabilities provide the support required from product selection through batch supply.
